Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Peel, core, and slice the apples.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Gently toss to coat the apples evenly.
- Stir in the apple cider or juice (if using) and lemon juice.
- Pour the apple mixture into a 9-inch pie plate or baking dish. Dot the top with the butter pieces.
- If baking as a stand-alone filling, cover the dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the filling is bubbly. If using in a pie, bake according to your pie crust recipe instructions. Uncover during the last 10-15 minutes of baking for stand-alone filling to allow for browning.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a thicker filling, increase the flour to 3 tablespoons. You can also add other spices like cardamom or ginger to your liking. This filling is delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
