Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 medium Granny Smith Apples Peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 0.75 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 0.25 cup Packed Light Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground Allspice
  • 0.25 cup Apple Cider or Juice Optional, for extra moisture
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice Helps prevent browning
  • 1 tablespoon Unsalted Butter Cut into small pieces

Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • 9-inch Pie Plate or Baking Dish
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Peeler
  • Knife

Method

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Gently toss to coat the apples evenly.
  4. Stir in the apple cider or juice (if using) and lemon juice.
  5. Pour the apple mixture into a 9-inch pie plate or baking dish. Dot the top with the butter pieces.
  6. If baking as a stand-alone filling, cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  7. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the filling is bubbly. If using in a pie, bake according to your pie crust recipe instructions. Uncover during the last 10-15 minutes of baking for stand-alone filling to allow for browning.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a thicker filling, increase the flour to 3 tablespoons. You can also add other spices like cardamom or ginger to your liking. This filling is delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
