- In a medium saucepan, combine apple cider, bourbon, brown sugar, orange zest, orange juice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the brown sugar is dissolved.
- Reduce heat to low and let it simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, or longer for a more intense flavor. Do not boil.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Carefully strain the cider (optional) to remove spices before serving for a smoother drink.
- Garnish each serving with a few apple slices, if desired.
- Serve warm in mugs or heat-safe glasses.
Notes
For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon and add a splash of extra apple juice or maple syrup to taste. You can adjust the amount of spices to your preference. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
