Ingredients

Filling Ingredients
  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup Packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
Topping Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups Rolled oats old-fashioned or quick-cooking
  • 0.5 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Packed light brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter cold, cut into small pieces

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large bowl
  • Pastry blender or fork

Method

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple filling.
  6. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely cover the dish with foil for the last 15-20 minutes of baking.
  7. Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For a spicier crisp, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the filling. You can also substitute other types of apples, such as Honeycrisp or Fuji.
